MCP and skills are becoming two key pieces for building AI agents that are more useful, more controlled, and better adapted to real workflows. But they do not solve the same problem.

I am probably not the only one who has heard phrases like “this can be solved with an MCP” or “wouldn’t a skill work for this?” in a work meeting. Unfortunately, those ideas often come with an uncomfortable thought: maybe we are not really understanding what each thing is, and we are proposing AI just for the sake of proposing AI.

The simplest way to understand it is this:

MCP connects the agent to tools, data, and external systems.
Skills teach the agent what knowledge, rules, and examples it should keep in mind for a specific task.

In other words: if you need AI to query a database, read a repository, create tickets, or interact with an external tool, you are probably talking about MCP. If you need AI to use an internal library, respect your conventions, follow a style guide, or work with company-specific examples, you are probably talking about skills.

As a backend developer, I think this distinction matters. AI should not be adopted as a race to automate everything without judgment. In companies, the sensible path is to move coherently, avoid “vibecoding,” and keep a layer of human review whenever there is real impact. That is where MCP and skills make sense: not as magic, but as architecture and process.

What MCP is

MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. It is a protocol designed so AI applications and agents can connect in a standardized way to tools, data sources, and external systems.

Instead of creating a different integration for every tool, MCP proposes a common way to expose capabilities to the agent. Those capabilities can range from reading data from a database or checking internal documentation to analyzing a repository, creating tickets, searching a corporate system, or running controlled actions in an external tool.

Many of the tasks enabled by MCP look like the kind of work we would normally solve with an integration. It lets the model interact with environments it would not know how to connect to on its own. The difference is that MCP tries to standardize that connection so we do not have to build a completely different integration for every tool, API, or data source.

A simple MCP example

Imagine a technical support agent connected through MCP to a ticketing system, an internal knowledge base, application logs, and deployment documentation.

When a user reports an error, the agent could check incident history, review related documentation, and propose a response. If it has permissions, it could even prepare an action, such as creating a task for the backend team.

This is where judgment matters. In a company, we should not allow an agent to modify critical systems without supervision. The healthy approach is human in the middle: AI prepares, summarizes, recommends, or executes reversible actions; a person validates important decisions.


What skills are

Skills are packages of instructions, files, and conventions that extend the model’s practical context for a specific task or domain.

They do not have to be only a checklist or a style guide. They can also “teach” AI how to use an internal library, how to interpret a company convention, or how to work with an SDK that is not covered by public documentation.

A skill can include a style guide, examples of how to use an internal library, technical documentation snippets, recommended patterns and anti-patterns, output templates, criteria for asking clarifying questions, or security rules the model must respect.

If MCP answers “what can the agent interact with?”, a skill answers “what knowledge or way of working should the agent keep in mind?”.

A simple skill example

Imagine your company has an internal library for publishing domain events. The model does not know it because it is not on the internet, or because using it correctly depends on internal conventions.

A skill could explain when to use that library and when not to, how to initialize the event publisher, which fields are required, what a well-formed event looks like, and which mistakes to avoid, such as publishing events before a transaction is committed. It could also include naming conventions, version compatibility rules, and anti-patterns the team does not want to repeat.

With that skill, the agent does not need to connect to an external API or execute anything. It needs a reliable reference to generate code, review an implementation, or explain how to use that library without inventing patterns.

From the perspective of AI adoption in companies, this approach makes a lot of sense: it turns internal technical knowledge into reusable help without opening access to real systems yet. And that is the opposite of vibecoding: it is not about asking AI to “do this quickly,” but about giving it limits and examples so it works with better judgment.

The key is not to confuse power with convenience. Just because you can connect an agent to a tool does not mean you should. And just because a skill is simple does not mean it is well designed.


Advantages of MCP

Access to live data

MCP lets agents work with information that changes. This matters in technical support, customer service, reporting, and internal operations, where states, values, and criteria can change frequently and the system needs access to the latest version.

A skill can contain excellent instructions, but it does not know which tickets arrived today, what changed yesterday in the repository, or what state a service is in. MCP gives the agent access to that context, as long as it has permission.

Automation of real actions

MCP is not only for reading. It can also expose tools that act: creating an issue, updating a ticket, launching a query, preparing a report, retrieving logs, or running a workflow.

Here we need to be very careful. In backend development, we are used to thinking about permissions, side effects, traceability, and rollback. We should apply the same mindset to AI agents. An automatic action without validation can look efficient until it touches the wrong data or runs outside the right context.

We must always remember that AI is not deterministic and, like any generative process, it can make mistakes.

Standardized integrations

Without a common protocol, every integration becomes a custom piece. MCP aims to reduce that fragmentation.

This can help technical teams keep a cleaner architecture: an MCP server exposes capabilities, different clients consume them, and permissions can be managed more clearly than with improvised integrations.

Better fit for operational agents

An isolated chatbot replies. A connected agent can operate.

That does not mean it should operate without supervision. It means it can participate in real workflows: read, compare, prepare, summarize, propose, and in some cases execute controlled actions.


Disadvantages and risks of MCP

More technical complexity

MCP introduces an additional technical layer that requires almost the same checks we would apply to any regular application: where to host it, how to authenticate requests, how to transport data, which permissions to grant, which logs to keep, and which audit processes are needed.

For a team that only wants to improve the quality of internal answers, MCP can be too much. Sometimes a well-written skill solves the problem with less risk and less cost.

If the agent only needs to read documentation, it should not have permissions to write, delete, or execute actions. It sounds basic, but in internal integrations it is easy to say “let’s give it broad access and limit it later.” Bad idea.

One of the problems with spontaneous AI usage is that every person asks in a different way. The result depends too much on the prompt, the context, and the user’s experience.

Skills reduce that variability.

Instead of trusting every person to remember to ask “be clear, do not invent, separate risks, add a checklist, and limit assumptions,” the skill already contains that criterion.

This connects directly with responsible AI adoption. The goal is not for every developer to use AI however they want, but to create shared patterns that help the team without lowering the technical bar.

They are ideal for internal knowledge, tone, and methodology

Skills shine when the problem is not access to data, but keeping a concrete way of working with internal knowledge. They can review code using backend team criteria, teach the correct use of an internal library, write documentation with a specific editorial tone, classify incidents according to an internal protocol, prepare support responses without overpromising, or analyze a feature by separating impact, risk, and effort.

They reduce prompt repetition

A good skill avoids huge, repetitive prompts. You do not have to explain the same rules, conventions, or usage examples every time: operational knowledge is packaged and reusable.

They do not access live data by themselves

A skill can say “check the ticket status,” but if the agent has no access to the ticketing system, it cannot do it.

Skills do not replace integrations. They provide reusable context, rules, and knowledge; they do not magically connect external systems.

They can become outdated

In technology, an instruction that is valid today can become obsolete tomorrow.

This affects APIs, SDKs, frameworks, interfaces, internal policies, tool versions, and security rules.

That is why a skill should have an owner, a version, and a review date. Otherwise it becomes dead documentation with the appearance of automation.

They can be ambiguous

A skill with vague instructions produces vague results.

Bad example:

“Do a good technical review.”

A skill can start as useful and apparently clean, but if it is not reviewed with the same care as any other project dependency, it can end up introducing dangerous patterns: hidden email recipients, subtle data leakage, code with backdoors, or normalized insecure practices.

That is why skills should not be treated as harmless prompts. If a skill contains code examples, scripts, templates, or instructions that affect how an application is built, it should go through review, version control, and team approval, just like an internal library or a third-party dependency.

My criterion would be to start with the least complex option that solves the problem and iterate from there. If a skill is enough, I would not add MCP. If the agent needs live context or external actions, then it makes sense to open that door, but with controls.


How to use MCP safely without turning it into a black box

MCP security starts before writing the first line of integration. The first step is to assume that every tool exposed to the agent becomes part of the system’s attack surface. If the agent can query data, create tasks, or execute actions, that capability must be designed with the same care we would apply to any internal endpoint.

The base rule is minimum privilege. If the agent only needs to read documentation, it should not be able to write, delete, or execute actions. If it only needs to query one collection, it should not have access to the whole database. This sounds obvious, but in internal environments it is easy to grant broad permissions “to move faster” and leave cleanup for later. With AI, that later can become expensive.

It is also important to separate read and write capabilities. Reading documentation, reviewing tickets, or retrieving logs does not carry the same risk as closing an incident, sending an email, modifying configuration, or launching a deployment. Impactful actions should go through human approval, especially when they affect customers, production, security, or sensitive data.

Traceability is another important point. If the agent uses a tool, we should be able to know what it called, with which parameters, what response it received, and which final action was executed. Without clear logs, debugging a failure or investigating an incident becomes much harder. Not as a first impulse, but as a natural evolution: if the agent needs to query live data, retrieve information from internal tools, or prepare actions in other systems, MCP can add a lot. But at that point the conversation is no longer only about productivity; it is also about permissions, auditing, security, and operational responsibility.

That is why I would not start by connecting everything to everything. I would start with what the team already understands, test it with humans reviewing the results, and measure errors, friction, and real value. Then I would connect systems only where the benefit is clear, adding minimum permissions, logs, and approvals from the beginning.

The underlying idea is simple: skills first to organize judgment, MCP later to expand capabilities. And in both cases, keep human in the middle whenever there are critical decisions. AI should support technical judgment, not replace it.
